Let’s Go Mamak!

January 11th, 2010

“Let’s Go Mamak!” blends the unique flavours of contemporary ethnic Malaysian music. This was a performance held at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) on August 1 – 3 2008 by the group Inner Voices.

Tiffany, who had the privilege of catching this performance live, shared this clip with me and I thought.. wow.. this is truly one of Malaysia’s very few gems. The other few I can think of are:

1. Malaysia’s food. Especially in Penang!! And my mum’s Peranakan cooking… simply the best of the best.

2. Malaysia’s beautiful islands and dive sites – mainly off the coasts of Sabah.. my trip to Mataking Island validates this point. And the amazing Sipadan which I’ve yet to dive in!

3. Presevered cultural and historical structures like the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and Khoo Kongsi Temple in Penang and Peranakan houses near Melaka’s Jonker Street.

Everything else in Malaysia is crap. With the recent arson attacks on 11 churches and ongoing cases of  snatch thefts, there’s a sensible reason for everyone to get their ass out of Malaysia.

Back to Let’s Go Mamak! I think it’s really brilliant because any Malaysian immediately identifies and connects with the distinctive ritual of chilling out at mamaks with their homies from night till dawn.. and sometimes back for breakfast, after a few rounds of online gaming in the cyber cafe! :P

Those were the days…
